The Department of Postgraduate and Continuing Education, McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Center for the History of Medicine, Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine present a colloquium on the history of psychiatry and medicine featuring Dr. Lisa Gruenberg, author of the second-generation Holocaust memoir My City of Dreams. This free, virtual webinar is open to students of history and those valuing a historical perspective on their professions.
Dr. Gruenberg’s presentation will include:
1. Learning from a case study from the Shoah, with an admission note by psychiatrist Victor Frankl, author of Man’s Search for Meaning.
2. Exploring the history of Am Steinhof, Austria’s premier mental institution, as it moved from the forefront of psychiatric care to becoming a center of active euthanasia under National Socialism.
3. Exploring how historical trauma echoes down through generations.
